This is devotional thought number 1 in our all-new devotional series titled, “Sing Unto the Lord a New Song: Meditations From the Book of Psalms.”
“Blessed is the man That walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor standeth in the way of sinners, Nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; And in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, That bringeth forth his fruit in his season; His leaf also shall not wither; And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: But are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: But the way of the ungodly shall perish.” (Psalm 1).
Welcome to our new devotional series, which will prove to enhance your relationship with God. I want to be clear at the outset; I do not wish the title to mislead you. You may expect that all of our devotional thoughts will be about praise and thanksgiving; however, sometimes our songs are a manifestation of grief, pain, doubt, love, sadness, joy, patience, impatience, suffering, need, and the entire gamut of human emotion. Sometimes our songs ask more questions than they answer. Sometimes the praise and joyful worship are so lofty we can ride the wave for days. My point is that we will follow the Psalms wherever the Spirit leads as we learn to sing unto the Lord a new song, which is what psalms are - songs that communicate the human experience with God and others.
Right off the bat, the psalmist teaches the keen listener what trust in God looks like. Those who find delight in God’s Word and godly things are happy and to be envied. They are like trees planted by nutrifying rivers of water. In contrast, he writes that those who despise holiness and embrace wickedness dry up and are destroyed. Those who delight in the law of God prosper. Those who do not will be condemned in God’s judgment; the only judgment that is 100% accurate and just.
We all must ask ourselves, on which side of this paradigm would we rather be. The answer would seem obvious, but life just does not work that way. Sometimes we make poor decisions even when we have every reason and advantage to make the right one. Would you rather be condemned without God in your life, or prosper with all of heaven at your disposal, to help you live a holy and vibrant life throughout eternity? The choice is yours.
Sing unto the Lord a new song. Celebrate the blessedness of the good life of meditating upon all things godly. Embrace prosperity.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
