This is devotional thought number 5 in our devotional series titled, “Sing Unto the Lord a New Song: Meditations From the Book of Psalms.”

“To the chief Musician upon Muth-labben, A Psalm of David. I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.” (Psalm 9:1).

What is the highest praise? If you are a frequent church attendee or a member, you may have heard that “Hallelujah” is the highest praise, but is it? True enough, the word embraces adoration for and praise of Jah, our Creator. Hallelujah is jubilant praise with intense thanksgiving. It welcomes others to join in jubilant praise for the wondrous works of God. However, as with any word, this word that has so much meaning, means absolutely nothing to most who use it. Many say, “Hallelujah,” but few live a hallelujah lifestyle. I ask again, “What is the highest praise?” A life that praises our Creator with its whole heart is the highest praise! A sanctified life brings honor to God’s name and reputation more than any word can, and it is our privilege to live praise to God.

King David had a habit of living praise to God even when his enemies seemed to prevail against him; He would lift up his voice to match his lifted up life and give thanks to God for turning back his enemies, rebuking the heathen, destroying the wicked, defending his cause, and judging righteously. David knew what a mighty fortress is our God. He knew what it was to flee into God’s presence for refuge in his days of trouble. He loved God’s mercy. He enjoyed singing praises to the Lord and declared His marvelous works among the people. He encouraged the poor and needy and made it a habit of rejoicing in God’s salvation.

Does your life reflect the highest praise? I hope so.

Sing unto the Lord a new song. Celebrate the blessedness of living the highest praise, and not just talking about it.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
