This is devotional thought number 7 in our devotional series titled, “Sing Unto the Lord a New Song: Meditations From the Book of Psalms.”
“To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.
The heavens declare the glory of God;
and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
Day unto day uttereth speech,
and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
There is no speech nor language,
where their voice is not heard.
Their line is gone out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.
His going forth is from the end of the heaven,
and his circuit unto the ends of it:
and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.” (Psalms 19:1-6).
If you want to know about the God of heaven, contrary to popular belief, you can see Him clearly in nature. I am not saying that nature is God. I am not saying that everything in nature, as it has been marred by sin, still perfectly reflects His image. I am saying, however, that our wise Creator, signed all of the works of His hands and encoded their DNA, so no matter how bad it gets as we all await the coming of the Lord, there is always a link back to Him. The sky is still beautiful. The sun, though very hot in some places, and not hot enough in others, still does its duty and predictably rises and falls according to the patterns that have been established for thousands of years. God still feeds the birds. He still provides for His children. Babies are still not an accident, even when the parents make poor decisions; He breathed life into them. Rain still falls from the sky to the ground and not the other way around. Monkeys still breed monkeys and not human beings. Cows still breed cows and not snakes. Apple trees still bear apples and not coconuts. Boats still float on the ocean’s surface. Our lungs still govern our breathing. All of these things, and more bespeak godly, loving, order! Our God is a God of order, which is one of the reasons nature declares His glory.
Do you realize that Paul and David agreed on the next point of the Psalms? The verses following our theme text transition us to the next logical point of consideration regarding a loving God who created all things, and in whom their essence and order do consist. God, nature, and all the works of His hands are also a manifestation of law and order. Thus, in Psalm 19:7-11, David underscores and lauds the purity, perfection, joy, enlightening nature, perpetuity, and transformative power of the law of the Lord. Nature’s God loves law and order. In Romans 1, 2, & 7, Paul underscores the blessing that the visible things of nature reveal the mysterious, invisible things of God, and through divine providence, He reveals the law so none of us have any excuse for disbelieving God. He has done all to make Himself known through nature, providence, the holy law, prophets, good conscience, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus Christ. Isn’t God good?
Hopefully, you will be on the lookout for God’s signature everyday, as you learn to appreciate nature and its Creator more.
