This is devotional thought number 11 in our devotional series titled, “Sing Unto the Lord a New Song: Meditations From the Book of Psalms.”

“The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, And delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; And saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: But the Lord delivereth him out of them all.” (Psalm 34:17–19).

I probably do not need to write a treatise to convince you that sometimes life throws us curveballs. We can be sailing along just fine (or so we think), and then all “hot place full of fire” breaks loose. One day you’re floating on a fluffy cloud of hope and promise, and later on the same day (you don’t have to wait until the next sometimes), that billowy pillow of heavenly bliss turns against you and becomes angry clouds that burst the deluge of trials and gloomy tribulations. What gives here? Why does life seem so unfair? Why is it so unpredictable? Is there anyone, anywhere who can help us get out of this mess?

Well, the likely answer is that God can. He can't just get us out of our mess, for now, but also eternity. In the meantime, while we await the coming of Christ, we can surrender our lives to God, cry out to Him and He will hear. Our God will deliver us, at just the right time. He may not come at the exact time we want or expect, but He is always on time. He saves those who humble ourselves before God and lament the times we have done wrong. We will have trials (seems to be a common theme these days). We will have burdens and unexpected bumps in the road, but the Lord is well able to deliver us from them all. The bonus blessing is that this life is not eternal. We will not need to contend with this forever. At just the right time, Jesus will keep His promise and return to take His people, who have put all our trust in Him, to heaven for a thousand year vacation. After that thousand year period is over, the humble will inherit the New Earth, wherein dwells 100% righteousness, 100% of the time. So, hold on. Know that God is with you if you keep the faith, and one day soon, all of your trials will be a distant memory.

Sing unto the Lord a new song. Celebrate God’s deliverance.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
