Today’s Scripture Focus: Isaiah 55:1-9
We are focusing on sin recovery principle number six of 12: “We are now ready for God to give us new characters that reflect that of His Son’s.”
God wants you to eat like royalty! I hope this message comes to you in time for breakfast; it will be quite satisfying.
Most people like free food. This is why people you did not invite came to your wedding reception. This is why your last holiday barbecue had 20 more people in attendance than you expected (or even knew for that matter), and every one of them seemed like they fasted for a week before coming to your house. This is why you cannot even consider having a meeting of any duration without answering the stakeholders’ question, “Is there gonna be food?”
Yet, most of us couldn't care less about whether the food is healthy. Yesterday, I talked about us being satisfied far too easily. Today, it seems some of our bellies have a hole in the bottom, and we cannot be satisfied. We cram delectable desserts, belly bloating drinks, budget-busting entrees, and cardboard-boxed meals into our bodies at times (even some of the ones that say meatless and fat-free), and our waistlines tell the tale. The irony is, while we have convinced ourselves that we are satisfied by every morsel and every drop, like windup toy robots we cannot help but to go back for seconds and thirds. Shew! I am getting indigestion even thinking about this.
Don’t blink; we are going somewhere with this. You do not want to miss it!
I will not bore you with the details of the brain structure called the hypothalamus works to help regulate our appetites and satisfaction response, but suffice it to say, when the body gets what it needs, we are immediately satisfied. When we eat and drink things that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in proper balance, we do not long for more. We are equipped with the energy we need until it is burned off and it’s really time to load up again. This is the case, at least, when we do not suffer from greed or eating disorders.
I know you probably did not expect a message about eating and drinking today, but here comes the real message. In the same way, we cram our bellies with food that is unsatisfying at times, we also cram our lives with relationships, sinful behavior patterns, and thoughts that never satiate our appetites. This is why we want more and more, developing addictions that never seem to loosen their grips. One cigarette is never enough. One episode is never satisfying. You need to be in front of the TV for the whole season and write a play-by-play commentary on social media. One night with that person who is not your spouse never seems to do the trick if you enjoy yourself. Stealing just $20 never gets the bills paid. Withholding just one week's worth of God’s tithes and offerings does not get you closer to paying off that mortgage. Telling one lie never resolves the problem fully. This sort of behavior always leaves us all wanting more.
In our theme text, the Lord is welcoming us all to eat for free and He is providing the meal. When we imbibe godly love, peace, fearlessness, confidence, faith, fellowship, and holiness in general, there is nothing this world has that can entice us. The key is that we continue to pull our proverbial seats to the Lord’s table and allow Him to feed us ‘til we want no more. He can fill our lives to the point that fake, processed sin patterns become a thing of the past.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
