This is devotional thought number 26 in our devotional series titled, “Sing Unto the Lord a New Song: Meditations From the Book of Psalms.”
“Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: Bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; But I will trust in thee.” (Psalm 55:22–23).
Have you ever wished you could grow wings and fly away from your troubles? Have you ever felt this way because those closest to you seemed to be your chief antagonists? Maybe your so-called friends have been talking about your personal business behind your back, or one of your parents told people lies about you. Sometimes those who are supposed to be your best friends or loving relatives speak smooth things to your face, but spew vitriol about you behind your back.
David was no stranger to this kind of hypocrisy and faced many difficulties from his so-called friends. As most people would who have had enough of the lies, gossiping, backstabbing, and disrespect, David cried out. He had had enough! He just wanted it to stop. He wanted to be normal again; with normal relationships where he would not have to look over his shoulder every minute, hoping his frenemies were not lurking in some dark alley waiting to pounce on him.
Among his cries and many complaints to God about this, he managed to refocus his attention away from the slights of evil men. He knew that God was always watching, and was available to provide protection and grace when they assailed him. He found consolation in God sustaining him, and the fact murderous folks cannot continue forever. At some point, if they do not repent, the tragedy of their lifestyle will catch up with them. God cannot be mocked. Whatever we have a habit of sowing, we will reap. Likewise, He will not allow the righteous to fail or be overcome. At just the right time, all battered and bruised, the righteous will receive the rewards for which Jesus is worthy, and that He purchased with His life.
Sing unto the Lord a new song. Celebrate the destruction of evil. It will not be long, now.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
