This is devotional thought number 28 and final, in our devotional series titled, “Sing Unto the Lord a New Song: Meditations From the Book of Psalms.”
“A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem. How joyful are those who fear the Lord— all who follow his ways! You will enjoy the fruit of your labor. How joyful and prosperous you will be! Your wife will be like a fruitful grapevine, flourishing within your home. Your children will be like vigorous young olive trees as they sit around your table. That is the Lord’s blessing for those who fear him. May the Lord continually bless you from Zion. May you see Jerusalem prosper as long as you live. May you live to enjoy your grandchildren. May Israel have peace!” (Psalm 128, NLT).
Imagine my joy as I read the 128th Psalm today. I come from a broken home in the midst of a community of mostly broken homes. I can remember witnessing only a few (apparently) successful marriages, besides some on television. So, the idea of prosperous families, faithful husbands, emotionally engaged children, and flourishing wives was a fairy tale to me. But, the Bible promises this and more to men who diligently seek the Lord and walk in His ways. OK, God; you’ve got my attention! Where do I sign up?
Today’s theme text reminds me of the “seek ye first the kingdom of God” text, where Jesus promises to take care of all the needs of those who seek His kingdom and righteousness, in priority over all else. I love the idea that the God who sees all, and is all-powerful (Blessed be His name) promises to supply all my family needs if I seek Him first, too. I need to enjoy the fruit of my labor. I need to be joyful and prosperous. I need my wife to flourish, be fruitful and supportive. I need my son to be noble and dutiful. I need to experience my grandchildren if the Lord delays His coming. I need to be blessed, to the point that I will inhabit the New Jerusalem with my entire household. How may I have all of this and more? The king paints this idyllic portrait for those who walk in God’s ways and live according to His commandments. I like this arrangement, considering I am undeserving of His mercy. I am so happy God is able to transform sinners like me so we can indeed enjoy the blessings promised in the 128th division of the Psalms. The cool thing about it is that Job, the man who came through great tribulations is a prime example of this blessing in living color.
Sing unto the Lord a new song. Celebrate the family bounties that come to those who put God first.
