This is devotional thought number 47 in our devotional series, “Essentials of Faith.” Our subject is: Growth in Him

Here’s the question for consideration: What will I certainly have when I abide in Christ?

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on thee: Because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: For in the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:” (Isaiah 26:3–4).

Do you want to wrapped up, tied up, and tangled up in peace? Do you want your peace to have peace? Do you want peace with self, God, and whatever happens in the world around you? The prophet enjoins all who desire peace that is beyond human ability and comprehension to do two simple things: fix our minds upon Him and trust Him. How? How do we keep calm when people try to agitate us? How can our faces, body language, and outward behaviour manifest inner peace? Do note before I continue that this species of peace is not dependent upon the world around it to give it an easy ride or be peaceful too. This peace is completely dependant upon the Holy Spirit.

Here are a couple of things you can actually practice everyday to enter the peace zone with God: first, you can set aside quiet time to read about and pray over the life of Christ. That can be found in the New Testament books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John (I especially like John’s book). With that you can regularly review the love chapter of 1 Corinthians 13 with prayer for guidance. These are in addition to whatever your daily study regimen is. Yes, this will require time investment. Second, be on the lookout for opportunities to build your trust in God, in baby steps. When someone cuts you off in traffic, ask God to help you keep your composure. When your money is funny and you need to decide whether you will return and honest tithe and cheerful offering to His work, or settle your bills first hoping there's enough for Him, ask Him to help you trust Him to do the right thing. When you have a cantankerous spouse who seems bent on your emotional demise, ask God to show you peace in the midst of the storm. This approach to trust and going to God immediately, builds your trust muscles for the big stuff like being diagnosed with colon cancer, losing a daughter to a drunk driver, or being kidnapped and abused while enjoying yourself on family vacation.

As we surrender ourselves, trials, triumphs, plans, and the unknown to God daily, He will increase our faith, trust, and peace. We will be invigorated by His everlasting strength and say with beloved brother Paul who was no stranger to intense trials: “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:17–18).—L.
