This is devotional thought number 53 in our devotional series, “Essentials of Faith.” Our subject is: My Daily Work

Here’s the question for consideration: How soon will I begin the work that God has given me to do after Christ has found me?

“The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.” (John 1:43–46).

The Captain of your soul has delivered your marching orders; now march!

One of the things I love about being a Christian is that the Bible requirements are a natural outgrowth of our relationship with God. Unlike military training, academic pursuits, and other great disciplines, Christian duties are a minute-by-minute supply from God to accomplish His will. We pray. He leads. We submit. We do. Rinse and repeat. Yes, I am oversimplifying, but only to the extent that I am leaving out all the details of every individual’s responsibilities because each person’s work is different. As outlined in the Bible’s treatise on the Spirit’s gifts in 1 Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4, the Holy Spirit gives everyone a unique perspective for carrying out God’s marching orders as He sees fit.

In our theme passage we see the common response of people who embrace their new encounter with God. Invariably, like Philip, they “find” someone with whom to share the One of whom the law and the prophets wrote. Not only this, they refuse to allow others to attempt to live vicariously through them. They bid their listeners, “come and see for yourself.” Notice, too, that once he consented to follow Jesus, he knew to share with others. Jesus did not need to create some flashy personal ministries campaign, beg people to participate in a contrived evangelism program, or guilt trip anyone into performing some task that is against their individual blueprint. No. Philip, and the others spread the great news about the Messiah naturally, and from their perspectives as the Spirit empowered them. What a blessing.

While it is true that we can become better equipped, more creative, and more skilful in sharing Christ with others, this is more a function of growth in Christ and diligence in practice than mastering academics of vocational skills. The Holy Spirit walks with us to guide us in the paths of righteousness. With the Holy Spirit working in and through us, we may move forward in confidence, faith, and thanksgiving as we cooperate with God for the salvation of souls (including our own).—L.
