This is devotional thought number 56 in our devotional series, “Essentials of Faith.” Our subject is: To Know Him

Here’s the question for consideration: According to Jesus, what is eternal life?

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17:3).

Eavesdropping is usually one of the more offensive things a person can do, especially to the one who is talking about the eavesdropper. If you are the offender, you may hear anything. You could hear that someone despises you. You could hear that your relationship with someone you considered to be a close friend really is not that great. The point being, you may overhear something that would hurt your feelings.

One person, who would not be offended if you eavesdropped on His conversation, is Jesus. You most certainly would not overhear anything bad, especially if He is talking with the Father. Jesus is portrayed in John 17 as praying, what could be called a high priestly prayer, just before His trial and death. I love the part about life eternal. He prays that He has been given power over all flesh and the power to give eternal life. It does not stop there. Jesus says that eternal life is to know God and Jesus Christ. So many people claim to know people whom they are only merely acquainted with. To know God is not a simple knowledge of Him. It is much deeper than that. Look at these examples. “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.” Genesis 4:1. “And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.” (Genesis 4:17). “Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” (Luke 1:34). Judging from the context we see that to know means something intimate. This is the case with eternal life. If we have an intimate relationship with God through Jesus Christ, then we have eternal life. “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (1 John 5:11-13).

Let us pray daily that God will give us the strength to enter into an intimate relationship with Him. Get to know Jesus; He is a great friend. Knowing Him is eternal life.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
