This is devotional thought number 62 in our devotional series, “Essentials of Faith.” Our subject is: My Privilege of Prayer
Here’s the question for consideration: Did Jesus pray while living on earth?
“And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.” (Mark 1:35).
Sometimes people mystify the humanity of Christ. I mean, people take the miracle of the virgin birth and, by virtue of it, nullify His humanity. The fact that Jesus was indeed born of a woman, means that her human genetics were passed on to Him. Don’t read too much into this. I am simply saying, do not explain away the reality of Jesus’ human needs because He was God in the flesh. He did not engage His innate divine power to relieve His own human needs or overcome temptation. He was at least as dependent upon the power of His heavenly Father, as you are. This need informs our simple thought for the day.
Jesus prayed. Why? Jesus was a human being with the devil dogging His heels every step of His short life of just more than 33 years. He understood His responsibility to live a holy life for the purpose of sanctifying all those who would be saved. He understood the unmentionable complexity and unspeakable woe failure would have brought to the universe and the mysterious relationship of the Godhead. Thus, it was Jesus’ honor to remain in communion with His Father at all costs.
Besides all I have mentioned, Jesus’ desire to commune with His Father was related to His desire to save others. Have you ever sought to help someone and realized that you were woefully ill-equipped or in way over your head? Or if not over your head, did you recognize that if you ever let down your guard, it would be to that person’s demise? Jesus understood that there was too much at stake in this controversy between good and evil, and would not have dared risking eternal loss by disconnecting from His Father. He worked much; therefore, He need a living connection, much. This is why He resorted to the sanctuary of prayer so He could be alone with God before anyone was around to distract Him.
Are you willing to learn from His example? Are you willing to lose a few minutes of extra sleep so you can gain immeasurable interaction with the King of Kings? If Jesus needed to invest time in prayer, we definitely do!—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
