This is devotional thought number 68 in our devotional series, “Essentials of Faith.” Our subject is: What Should I Do With Doubt?
Here’s the question for consideration: Of whom do the Scriptures speak?
Can you imagine having a precious treasure in your possession but never appreciating its value? That’s what it’s like to have a Bible and even reading the Bible with no appreciation for your precious Savior, Jesus Christ.
Pride is a terrible thing. I understand there may be wordsmiths reading this devotional thought and thinking, “There are positive aspects of pride.” Granted. There are times we feel proud that our children do well in school, learn to love God, choose the right mates, or represent our families well while being interviewed in mainstream media. That’s not the kind of pride we are discussing today. The kind of pride I’m referencing is best described in the following passage: “Pride goeth before destruction, And an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud.” (Proverbs 16:18–19). Here’s another verse: “When pride cometh, then cometh shame: But with the lowly is wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2). This brand of pride places us at odds with our Creator. It makes us unreasonable, unteachable, and very difficult to convince of the dangerous life paths on which we are travelling. It’s this brand of pride that Lucifer mysteriously authored in the heavenly courts as he began to exalt himself above God.
It was this mindset that many of the religious elite espoused during Jesus’ day. They were fastidious observers of rites, ceremonies, contrived regulations, self-imposed edicts, etc. They embraced many rigid practices that made them appear pious to unwary onlookers. However, obscured among their many contrivances was the Person of God. They could not see Him for the loving God He is, because they complicated their connection. They embraced their abilities while casting aside their Savior.
I’d like you to do yourself a favor today: please invest quality time in reading your Bible with new lenses. Please ask God to help you see How valuable Jesus is in every reading. Ask Him to help you relate your discoveries to the plan of salvation. Jesus told some of the religious elite that they were on enchanted ground as their focus for searching the Scriptures was self-generated so-called holiness, instead of accepting the invitation to experience a rich relationship with Him. Ask God to give you patience and humility as you approach Him through His Word, daily.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
