This is devotional thought number 69 in our devotional series, “Essentials of Faith.” Our subject is: What Should I Do With Doubt?
Here’s the question for consideration: How may I strengthen my faith in the Scriptures?
“Whom shall he teach knowledge? And whom shall he make to understand doctrine? Them that are weaned from the milk, And drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; Line upon line, line upon line; Here a little, and there a little:” (Isaiah 28:9–10).
Ignorance is not bliss. So much of what’s wrong in our world today is from willful ignorance, lack of understanding, and perspectives limited by unwillingness to change.
The Bible is our guide for life. With the Holy Spirit’s help, we can find principles in God’s Word that address any and all our difficulties. Do want to know how to find the right spouse? Are you perplexed about last-day events? Are your children going down the wrong path? Do you need to reconcile with a coworker? Do you lack faith? Are you having financial problems? The Bible has practical advice, encouraging principles, reliable promises, and strong counsel that applies to every situation. What’s more, is that the Scriptures are a direct link to a relationship with God!
Studying the Scriptures takes time, perseverance, and humility. We all need to invest time in prayer, specifically to ask God how to apply the Scriptures. The Bible says, “The entrance of thy words giveth light; It giveth understanding unto the simple.” (Psalm 119:130). We need to ask God to help us be patient as we study. “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” (Romans 15:4). We need to ask God to make us willing to listen. “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.” (John 7:17). Yes, each of the verses I cited have their direct context, but they are just a powerful and applicable to us today.
How may I strengthen my faith in the Scriptures? When I am humble and submissive to the Lord, willing to compare Scripture with Scripture, and open to Him making me holy thereby, I will soon recognize His power, truth, and ability to transform my life. Step-by-step, I will learn to live by every word of God.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
