This is devotional thought number 70 in our devotional series, “Essentials of Faith.” Our subject is: What Should I Do With Doubt?
Here’s the question for consideration: Even though I may not understand all there is to know about God, what must I do daily to understand what He has revealed about Himself?
“If thou seekest her as silver, And searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, And find the knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:4–5).
I am amazed at how much effort many of us put into amassing wealth. Some are willing to call every person they have ever known or encountered to share a business opportunity, and are willing to travel the country all hours of day and night to build their empire. Others invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in education costs to get three degrees to secure a career where their bosses will work them half to death (or worse). Some are willing to ply a trade from dawn to dusk just to pay for a vehicle that costs as much as some houses did in the not too distant past. Don’t get me wrong. I get it. Money is not evil. Abraham, Job, and other Bible stalwarts were well off. God made some pretty spectacular promises to His people in Deuteronomy 28. The question for all of us, is whether we are willing to seek God like hidden treasure. We know how to go after our goals in life. Are we able to apply that same zeal, or even greater, to seeking God’s face?
When I first got baptized, the church was studying a Bible lesson book on the book of Proverbs. For some reason, I was intrigued by our theme text. I learned that Jesus was the Wisdom of whom the prophets taught (Proverbs 8; 1 Corinthians 1:30). I learned that He was a valuable Treasure (Matthew 13:46). I learned that if I humble myself before God and seek His face like I would a pot of gold, He would reveal the mysteries of heaven. He would manifest Himself in my life in ways I could never have imagined. He promised that He would teach me respect for all that is holy. He promised an intimate relationship with Him that would be eternal life to me.
We all know what it means to focus our energies to aspire to, and attain whatever we value most. Wouldn’t be wonderful if we all did that for spiritual things? How would our world be if we did so? There would be no more crime, hatred, racism, poverty, selfishness, hunger, disease, or confusion. There would be no more wars, gang violence, hacking, or sex trafficking. There would be no more slavery, politricks, or religious bigotry. There would be no more pride, gun violence, or torture. Seek God with all you are and let Him give you His wisdom and a daily relationship with Him.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
