This is devotional thought number 71 in our devotional series, “Essentials of Faith.” Our subject is: What Should I Do With Doubt?
Here’s the question for consideration: If I still have some doubt concerning the Scriptures, though I read them daily, what should I do?
“And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” (Mark 9:24).
God is good! Do you believe it? There are times in our lives when trials overwhelm us, pain burdens us, and difficulties overshadow us. We find it most difficult, in those times, to see the rays of God’s light in our lives. What should we do, then?
If you read the entire story of the man pictured in our theme text, you will notice his hopeless feelings. His child was in an impossible situation and he had no power to fix it. He was in God’s presence. He knew Jesus would be his only hope. He trusted Him. He also knew that life was so complex, and that he could not even trust his trust. Did you get that? It was not a typo. The man who trusted God wanted to be doubly sure there was no latent distrust or faithlessness in him that would hinder the deliverance he sought from Jesus.
I have often admired this man. I admire his vulnerability. I admire the fact that he trusted God, but wanted to yield the unknown to Him. I admire that he did not give up when he felt helpless, even though the devil had caused havoc in his family for years. I take courage from his willingness to be open and honest with God, and made himself available to receive the faith he needed.
We can apply this man’s submission to all areas of life, including our approach to the Bible. When we need answers, but are having difficulty finding them, we must surrender any inkling of unbelief to Him. This father recognized that false piety would get him nowhere, and that it could have meant the demise of his son. If you have doubts, hopeless feelings, moments of faithlessness, etc., give them to Jesus. Exercise that tiny little measure of faith He has given you, and watch Him provide deliverance you could have only dreamed of. He loves you. He has your best interest at heart. He’s trustworthy.—L.
