This is devotional thought number 77 in our devotional series, “Essentials of Faith.” Our final subject is: Rejoicing in the Lord

Here’s the question for consideration: If I am tempted to focus on my faults and difficulties instead of Jesus, what should I do?

“The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!” (Matthew 6:22–23).

Whatever you focus on takes over your mindset. Notice that I did not say whatever you see or look at takes over. To focus is to align our thoughts with our eyes or vision.

Have you ever noticed how some of us are more negative than others? Have you noticed how some find positivity amid difficulty? What makes the difference? Focus. If I center my attention on the hole of a bagel when I am hungry, guess what will happen? I will stay hungry. What if I direct my thoughts to the wonderfully baked and very satisfying bagel filled with a hearty, healthy spread, and sprinkled with a tasty topping? What effect will it have on my hunger if I follow my focus to its logical ends? I will be satisfied.

God has so graciously given us His Spirit, Word, and power to be able to navigate any trial we encounter. He has provided all we need to brim with thanksgiving, considering the many times He has delivered us from depression, danger, need, gossipers, and a host of other emotional assailants. But, what some of us do, instead of focusing our minds on Him and how good He’s been in the past, we become fixated on the negatives.

Could it be that this mindset is why so few people enjoy peace and victory over sin? Could it be that even conscientious people are defeated because we waste our time talking about how much we have failed, how many times we have broken our promises, and how often we’ve found ourselves entrenched in difficulty, rather than how many times God has come through for us, how He’s able to keep His promises in our lives, and that soon all our trials will be over? Could it be that when we face temptations we should immediately ask God to show His power in us and speak promises of victory, which He has provided in Scripture? Could it be that the power of life and death is indeed in our tongues and that we can agree with God and confess that He is able to keep that which we have committed to Him until the day Jesus returns? Could it be that if we invest prayerful time reading about Jesus’ life in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, that we can become like the One depicted in those hallowed accounts?

If I am tempted to focus on my faults and difficulties instead of Jesus, what should I do? -Pray without ceasing
-Speak to myself in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs
-Read aloud and claim the promises of Scripture that apply to my current situation
-Rinse and repeat

Focus on Christ, His merits, and His love for you. Watch in awe, as your God accomplishes victory-after-victory in your behalf.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
