This is devotional thought number 81 in our devotional series, “Essentials of Faith.” Our final subject is: Rejoicing in the Lord

Here’s the question for consideration: When difficulties in life do erupt, how may I respond to them, by the grace of God?

“Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.” (1 Samuel 7:12).

Here’s a worst case scenario for those sincerely desiring to serve the Lord, as we wrap up this series. Let’s say (God forbid), you have reached the pinnacle of your spiritual journey with God, but somehow lose focus. Like Moses, the leader of God’s people, you’ve had many encounters with God that have created a faith atmosphere in your life that prepared you for any trial. In a moment of self-reliance, you betray your God. What do you do? What if you are more like the ancient Israelites, despite these 80+ targeted devotional thoughts that gave you clear steps to follow towards Christ, and you keep falling and getting up? You can see that the end is near. You sense that the angel will soon blow the final trumpet and Jesus will come to give everyone their rewards, according to their works. You are rebounding in your spirituality. You need encouragement. How do you get it? To what can you look, to push you through those final obstacles?

Take a page out of Samuel’s book as you contemplate your journey. Have a retrospective look at your life and how good God has been to you. Create a mental monument to the tens of thousands of times God has come through for you, even when you’ve faltered. Perhaps you could dedicate a notepad or document on your computer, to chronicling three things for which you are thankful each day. Take special note of the times God has been merciful to you amid your trials and mistakes. Do note the fact that since He was so kind and merciful to take care of you in the past, that He will prove faithful at present, if you keep your faith in Him.

When difficulties in life do erupt, how may I respond to them, by the grace of God? No matter the cause of my difficulties, whether self-imposed, or as a function of the devil’s hatred for God’s people, I must remember God’s goodness. I must return to true worship. I must watch Him fight my battles. I must persevere, by God’s grace. I must receive my crown of life when Jesus returns. I must praise God throughout eternal ages for His wonderful gift of love! Amen.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
