This is devotional thought number 1 in our devotional series titled, “O For a Faith That Will Not Shrink.”
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1–2).

How can we develop shrink-resistant faith; the kind of faith that will not tremble when on the brink of failure; the kind of faith that does not murmur or complain beneath the burden of chastening; the kind of faith that shines amid the darkness of life’s tempests and storms; the kind of faith stays true to the narrow path of righteousness until Jesus returns to take His people into the heavenly portals? If we ever hope to develop such faith, we must lay hold of the One who gives us our faith.

One of the reasons so many of us fail to develop saving faith is that we are trying to generate it. We live in a works-based society so we are cultured into thinking our efforts are the sole factor in creating desired outcomes. We work 40 hours and get a paycheck. We work better than average and we get recognition, commendation, performance bonuses, and merit increases. We perform at a higher level of effectiveness and we get the much coveted promotion. In our society, the energy we put into things determines the outcomes. This is not completely foreign to the Bible (our efforts do matter), but the focus is antithetical to the saving faith principle.

Among the several wonderful truths present in our theme passage is a gem of blessing that we often read briskly by. In verse 2, the Bible says that Jesus is the Author and FInisher of our faith. This means that He’s the One whose faith it is; He’s the One who originated it; He’s the One who increases our faith; and He’s the One who perfects our faith. Jesus Christ is the One who puts the finishing touches on our faith, even the salvation of our souls unto everlasting life.

If we are to develop shrink-resistant faith that will not fail when tested, we must receive it from the Originator and Perfecter of faith, Jesus Christ the Righteous who gave us the best example of this kind of faith.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
