This is devotional thought number 27 in our devotional series, “Removing the Veil: Sanctuary Living in the 21st Century.” Our subject is: Following the Pattern to a T
Here’s the question for consideration: Do the details matter?
“And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.” (Exodus 25:8–9).
In the beginning of our series, we invested a great deal of time explaining the principle of pattern vs. genuine article. We will not cover that here today. Be sure and go back to the first week in the series for a refresher. Suffice it to say, that which is made after a pattern is not the article itself any more that a painting of your loving grandma is not her. A good painting captures elements of her essence that, hopefully, would inspire others to want to know more about her. The same, and more, is true concerning the pattern God gave for the tabernacle/sanctuary.
It is critical to note, despite all I have said about shadows and representations of the genuine articles, that God gave lots of details about every aspect of the sanctuary structures, materials, measurements, and placements, because they represented our holy Savior, Jesus Christ. Any deviation from the instructions God gave would have desecrated the holy character of Jesus. This is no light matter. God was kind enough to tell us everything we needed to know about how to honor Him through the sanctuary principle. Jesus gave His sinless life to save us from our sins. The least we could do is follow God’s instructions.
While it is true that Jesus eradicated the need for the Old Testament systems of sacrifices, along with its ceremonies, and rites, it is also true that they represent God’s attention to detail. They represent the specificity of God’s plan of salvation. This is why it’s critical to reject the notion that the Ten Commandments are no longer binding. This is why we must reject the notion that Jesus is less than equal to/one with the Father. This is why we must reject the notion that a sinful human being can be our confessor or get us into heaven. This is why we must reject the notion that our beneficent and merciful heavenly Father is out to get us. The details matter, even in our day.
The greatest detail we must embrace, if we’ve had the privilege of considering it is, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12). The details do matter, when God is the One giving them.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
