This is devotional thought number 3 in our devotional series titled, “O For a Faith That Will Not Shrink.”

“O love the Lord, all ye his saints: For the Lord preserveth the faithful, And plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.” (Psalm 31:23).

Love for God and faith go together like hand and a well fitted glove. There is no way possible for anyone who does not love God, to be faithful to Him.
I think sometimes simple sayings blow by us unnoticed because we are looking for something spectacular to wow us. In my opener, I showed the faith and love connection. Let me say it to you in the form of a question. Can a man who does not love his wife be faithful to her? Now, do not overthink this. Faithfulness in marriage is much more than refraining from sexual activities with persons outside our marriages. Those are just the outward manifestations of other issues in the relationship. How can a man who does not love his wife enough to  be faithful to her care if she is diagnosed with a debilitating disease? How can a man who does not love his wife be faithful to cherish her body and emotions as she changes during pregnancy? How can a man who does not love his wife stand up for her when misogynistic society tramples her honor? How can an unloving man be faithful not to abuse her physically, emotionally, mentally, or financially? I could go on with many more questions, to include those related to sexual fidelity, but you get the point. In my limited scope barrage of questions, I scratch the surface of the relationship between love and faith.

Now, in the spiritual realm, God’s love toward us, and His faithfulness to keep His promises are the power that enable us to reciprocate love and faith. What’s more, is when we respond to God with His power activating us, He rewards us for “our” faithfulness. Did you get that? God rewards us for being faithful even though we are merely returning that which He gave us in the first place. Therefore, love and faithfulness from God actuates our love and faithfulness toward God, which then entitles us to the reward of such love and faithfulness.

If we are to develop shrink-resistant faith that will not fail when tested, we must accept God’s love and faithfulness toward us, which will facilitate our love and faithfulness toward Him.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
