This is devotional thought number 28 in our devotional series, “Removing the Veil: Sanctuary Living in the 21st Century.” Our subject is: God’s Exalted Throne
Here’s the question for consideration: What do we have to look forward to in heaven?
“And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.” (Exodus 25:22).
In the ancient Israelite sanctuary, the most holy place represented the throne room of God. This is where the Ark of the Covenant was housed. The ark had a lid on it called the mercy seat. The Ten Commandment law was kept inside of it under the seat, and there were two cherubs made of gold, one on either side, facing one another. This is where the Lord’s visible presence rested.
When the Lord told Moses that He would commune with him and the children of Israel, from above the mercy seat, between the cherubims, He was communicating something very important. This was a position of power and holiness. Only God dwelt between the cherubims. In the heavenly realm, only God’s throne is between the cherubims, despite the devil’s desire to usurp that position. It was an honor to have God meet with His people from this exalted position.
God is still willing to meet with us today. He still dwells between the cherubims on His exalted throne (Isaiah 6). Instead of God using a human mediator like Moses, Jesus Christ is our only way into the God’s presence. Through the veil, which is Christ, we have access to the throne of God. “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that promised.” (Hebrews 10:19-23).
In the Old Testament, our loving heavenly Father gave us a glimpse of our hallowed destination. Did you know that one day, God’s people will ascend thrones and reign with Him? Here’s what the Bible says: “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:” (2 Timothy 2:12). “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.” (Revelation 3:21). Keep the faith, and one day you will begin to reign with God forever and ever.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
