“As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.” (Proverbs 11:19).
Sometimes people think that they can just float along through life aimlessly, like a ship without a sail, hoping to attain an eternal reward. It is like driving a car without a steering wheel, or flying an airplane with no navigational controls. There is no way to arrive anywhere beneficial, spiritually speaking, without being deliberate. We are not saved by default. We must actively respond to the faith, love, and power to obey, which God has already deposited within us.
Living according to God’s word is like running top speed toward our only chance at life. The Lord has already mapped out the absolute path to heaven, which is through a good relationship with Him. Choosing another route will always get us lost. We will never arrive at the right spiritual place unless we return to the right path.
Likewise, living outside of the Lord’s word is like flying a stealth military jet as fast as we can into the ocean. Certainly, it would disintegrate on impact. Those who choose a path opposite that of the Bible, do so to their own demise. It would not be a temporary situation. No, the death of the wicked is the second death that comes as the consequence of the judgment of God.
Let us pursue the path of righteousness, trusting that the Lord will guide us in the right direction. Let us be deliberate in our pursuit of Him. “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:6-9)—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
