This is devotional thought number 30 in our devotional series, “Removing the Veil: Sanctuary Living in the 21st Century.” Our subject is: A Sweet Smelling Savor
Here’s the question for consideration: What is one major benefit of believing in Jesus Christ?
“And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of shittim wood shalt thou make it. And thou shalt put it before the vail that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with thee.” (Exodus 30:1, 6).
Have you ever been in the room with someone with an offensive odor? I don’t mean the kind of odor that wafts through the air when someone didn’t bathe. You could detect a sweet scent, but then another conflicting scent overwhelmed you. Did it occur to you this person decided that if one great scent was good then three or four must be even better? They chose to shower with one type of perfumed soap, moisturize with another, and then add yet another type of cologne. Somehow, the three did not blend to produce the fresh scent they had hoped, and it was offensive.
God instructed Moses to make an altar of burnt incense. The priests were to use a specific mixture of incense on the altar at specific times. “Ye shall offer no strange incense thereon, nor burnt sacrifice, nor meat offering; neither shall ye pour drink offering thereon.” (Exodus 30:9). When this command was obeyed, the incense ascended above the veil and covered the stench of the burning flesh from the altar of burnt sacrifice in the outer court. Ultimately it represented the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ as a sweet smelling savor (Ephesians 5:2). Although this sacrifice was represented by the altar of burnt sacrifice, it was as sweet as incense before the nostrils of God. It also represented the prayers of God’s people (Revelation 8:4). Now, let’s put these symbols together. The incense offered on the altar represented the prayers of God’s people, sweetened by their faith in the perfect righteousness of Jesus.
When human beings, racked with sin, choose to approach the throne of God without transformational faith in the Lord Jesus, their prayers are like mixing several different scents together. It is offensive to God. “He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.” (Proverbs 28:9). It’s like a strange fire. The consequences are tremendous. “And Nadab and Abihu died, when they offered strange fire before the LORD.” (Numbers 26:61).
The benefits of believing in Jesus as the only acceptable Incense to sweeten our prayers are beyond words. In His name, all of the bounties of heaven are released into our lives. In His name is liberty and peace. Do not settle for the strange incense of self-righteousness. Offer only the blessed fragrance of faith in Jesus, and heaven will always be open to you.—L.
