This is devotional thought number 37 in our devotional series, “Removing the Veil: Sanctuary Living in the 21st Century.” Our subject is: Blessings From God’s Presence

Here’s the question for consideration: What does the sanctuary represent to us when we need deliverance?

“May Yahweh answer you in a day of trouble; may the name of Jacob’s God protect you. May He send you help from the sanctuary and sustain you from Zion. May He remember all your offerings and accept your burnt offering. Selah May He give you what your heart desires and fulfill your whole purpose. Let us shout for joy at your victory and lift the banner in the name of our God. May Yahweh fulfill all your requests. Now I know that the Lord gives victory to His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven with mighty victories from His right hand. Some take pride in chariots, and others in horses, but we take pride in the name of Yahweh our God.” (Psalm 20:1–7, HCSB).

What a blessing! No, seriously, our theme passage is a blessing on God’s people and a triumphant song for deliverance in battle.

I love how king David often directs God’s people’s attention to the holy sanctuary. In this passage, as David pronounces blessings, he hopes God will help and sustain His people from Zion, the sanctuary presence of God. This is powerful! We know that God does not actually dwell in buildings made by human hands. For even the grandest edifice could not contain the awesome wonder, which is YHWH (blessed be His name). Yet, because He wanted to come divinely near to His people, He had them build the sanctuary, which He was delighted to visit, as long as His people were submitted to Him. To them, the sanctuary was a symbol of His presence. So, when David sings unto the Lord and pronounces a blessing upon the people from the position of God’s sanctuary, he is tapping into the greatest power in the universe.

From where do we receive our greatest joy? From where do our answers come when we are in trouble? From where does our protection come? From where do our help and sustenance come? From where do we receive new and holy desires? From where do answers to all of our requests come? From where do God’s victory and anointing come? God’s presence, which to us is represented as His sanctuary is the capital of the universe. It is God’s throne room; His illimitable storehouse; His repository of victory for anyone who will receive it by faith. God’s presence (His sanctuary) is the place from which He gives His people every good and perfect gift, including the blessed gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.—L.
