This is devotional thought number 13 in our devotional series titled, “O For a Faith That Will Not Shrink.”
“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” (Revelation 2:7).
Can you hear God’s voice right now, trumpeting from His Word, that He wants you to be an overcomer? I hope so. But before that can happen, repent! That is God’s Word to His people, everywhere in the world. Repent! None of us are immune or excluded from God’s call to repentance. It is a gift from God that precedes access to the Tree of Life that is in the midst of the paradise of God.
The church of Ephesus had a problem. They frittered away their first love. They started in their journey with God, strong. They upheld the straight teachings of God. They withstood all false doctrine and called evil by its right name. But somewhere along the line something went terribly wrong. They allowed false doctrine to stir up so much controversy that the church fractured. Those who used to keep the standard were dying off and what was left was a shell of the church’s former zeal. They lost love for truth. They lost love for each other. They lost love for God. What did God tell them? “Repent! Before it’s too late. Repent!” He loved them enough to welcome them to the overcoming Spirit of God. “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent … He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” (Revelation 2:4–5, 7).
If we are to develop a shrink-resistant faith that will not fail when tested, we must keep our love connection with truth, the Creator, and His people. Until Jesus comes.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
