This is devotional thought number 39 in our devotional series, “Removing the Veil: Sanctuary Living in the 21st Century.”

“When the Messiah came, He proclaimed the good news of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone. The whole building, being put together by Him, grows into a holy sanctuary in the Lord. You also are being built together for God’s dwelling in the Spirit.” (Ephesians 2:17–22, HCSB).

The truth of the sanctuary, and by extension its effect upon our daily lives is a living organism. We have said that, more than a structure or edifice, the sanctuary is a microcosm of a Person. Jesus said that His body was a temple. The Old Testament writers like Ezekiel and king David said that Almighty God (blessed be His name) is our dwelling place, fortress, and little sanctuary. Thus it is that all we learn from sanctuary language in Scripture directs us to a living relationship with the living God, and our Savior, Jesus Christ.

This sanctuary principle has always been about removing the separation sin creates between God and humanity. The various offerings were to be given as a symbol of us exchanging our guilt for a faith-filled submission to the Lord. When we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive and cleanse us completely.

Our theme passage underscores the collective of persons who embrace the faith of Jesus. It shows how we may have access to our heavenly Father, which due to sin was impossible without dire consequences. The great news that Messiah was given to us by the ultimate act of our Father’s love comprises a clarion call that anyone, anywhere, who is willing to accept Jesus as Lord of our lives are no longer alienated from God, and we, together, become a living sanctuary of saints. This foundational truth, that Jesus is the Cornerstone of our faith, is the vitalizing truth that the prophets and apostles embraced and taught.

Sanctuary living in the 21st century is about taking our position in the living building of faith whose foundation is Jesus Christ, the Chief Cornerstone. Upon what (or whom) is your faith built?—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
