This is devotional thought number 16 in our devotional series titled, “O For a Faith That Will Not Shrink.”
“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;” (Luke 18:1).
Do you ever get tired of praying? Be honest. The truth is, prayer is like speaking to your closest friend. Do you get tired of talking to good friends?
Often we see prayer as a way to convince God to get on our program and provide exactly what we desire at the time we prescribe. This is part of the reason people get weary in prayer. When God does not comply with our demands, we think of all sorts of other stuff to do with our time. What if we learned to persevere in prayer. What if we learned that the conversation could be broader and could facilitate a lasting bond with our divine Savior and Friend, rather than just a way to get our way?
Don’t get me wrong, Jesus told His disciples to pray always. He said to keep asking, seeking and knocking; awaiting God’s promised responses to those who choose never to give up. So, by all means, do ask Him for what you want and need; but just do not stop there. If you see God as your holy Companion, who deserves your respect and also loves to hear you laugh, cares about your tears, has massive plans for your life that exceed your highest human thoughts, your prayer time will not be so wearying? You will begin to grow in ways you never thought possible, and when all is said and done, you will realize God had been recreating His character in your life. The outcome of such an experience is answers to prayer according to God’s will, and ultimately, eternity with Him. Prayer is the gateway to eternity with God and all those who also prayed without allowing weariness of spirit to deter their relationship with God.
If we are to develop a shrink-resistant faith that will not fail when tested, we must be open to perseverance in prayer.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
