This is devotional thought number 20 in our devotional series titled, “O For a Faith That Will Not Shrink.”

“And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.” (Mark 10:13, 14).

There were many times Jesus needed to correct His closest followers patiently. Their proximity to Him did not make them immune to various errors. Sometimes religious prejudice, violence, elitism, and just plain ignorance separated them, from the ideals of God.

One day, after Jesus’ opponents had finished quizzing Him concerning the law on marriage and divorce, children were brought before Him, and His disciples rebuked those who brought them. This is another case of misguided followers of Jesus falling short of His ideals. He was very displeased and told them not to hinder the children from coming to Him. What better place can a child be than in the presence of Jesus? Were not little Samuel, David, and Josiah familiar with the presence of God? Jesus then began to open to the people His ideal of the kingdom. He explained the humility and child-like faith one should possess when seeking a relationship with God. “Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.” (Mark 10:15).

Our children should be taught from an early age how to worship the Lord. They should be taught the pleasure of right relationship and obedience to Him. How much better would the world be today if we would stop hindering the children from going to God? Sometimes we hinder the children by hiring the television as a discount babysitter. Sometimes we hinder our children by disqualifying ourselves as good role models, and they begin modeling after the negative characters they see depicted on the silver screen and some music videos. If we would come before the Lord as humble children, willing to learn and be changed, we would have the tools of reformation in our hands. Let us choose today to allow the children the freedom to go to Jesus and forbid them not. There is no better place for them to be. “And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:5-9).

If we are to develop a shrink-resistant faith that will not fail when tested, we must become like little children in God’s presence and trust Him in all things like a baby trusts her mommy to love and provide for her.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
