This is devotional thought number 21 in our devotional series titled, “O For a Faith That Will Not Shrink.”

“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” (Isaiah 1:18)

Have you ever been given an offer that you could not refuse? Did the other party involved, present their offer in such a way that you would have been unwise to refuse? I once encountered a mortgage lender with a special program where they would refinance my mortgage for free, give me an interest rate that was slightly above the market rates, and every one hundred-twenty days for the life of the loan, if the interest rates went down at least a quarter percent, I would receive a refinance package without another home appraisal or credit check. The benefit in my view was that since the lender would pay all of the closing costs and fees, I did not need to stay in my home for any period of time hoping to recoup the money I spent on the deal. I suppose this was their way of attracting mortgagees. In my case, it certainly worked.

God gives offers that are even more irresistible. He offers salvation as a totally free gift, and one of the catalysts is forgiveness. He pleaded with His children Israel, through the prophet Isaiah. He brought them a strong argument intending that they reach an understanding. Their sins had been noticed by heaven and could not be tolerated. God was in a situation where justice must be served. He chose to offer them a way of escape from the natural, spiritual consequences of their sins. The plan of salvation was clearly seen in the imagery. He would make their sins, though red like crimson, as white as snow. Their blood guilty sins were represented as crimson and scarlet, and the blood of the Lamb of God must be shed on their behalf. Through that transaction, which would take place in the future, they could receive absolute pardon and be seen as white as snow. “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.” (Isaiah 1:19- 20). The offer was on the table. They could receive the gift of forgiveness for free or pay dearly the penalty for their own sins. In my view the only option was to extend the hand of faith and receive the gift of God.

Where are you on this? Is there anything that would cause you to choose the alternative to God’s gift of forgiveness? It is a no-brainer. God’s way is always better. Pray that He will make Himself irresistible in your experience and hopefully you too will reach an understanding.

If we are to develop a shrink-resistant faith that will not fail when tested, we must wholeheartedly accept God’s offer of salvation and power to overcome those sins that overcame us in the past.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
