“He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” (1 John 2:4–6).
Religious people like me often discuss, and even debate the commandments. Which are we keeping? Which are we leaving out? Are they still binding? Have they been done away with?
Along with the many questions that invariably arise on the subject, I must ask myself if I love God and others. These are the two great commandments upon which all the law hangs. At the end of the day, if I say that I love God and beat my wife or curse my children, somebody’s lying. If I dress up in my tidy suit and put on my smart, colorful bowtie with matching cufflinks and dishonor my wife, none of my moral proclamations will mend her broken heart.
God’s word to all of us today is to walk like Jesus walked. He had compassion. He healed. He valued the feelings of others. He loved the unlovable. Jesus never demeaned or berated others. He began His days by asking His Father to do His will through Him.
So while you are reveling in the light of God’s holy commandments, please do keep basic human decency and mutual consideration on the top of your priority list.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
