This is devotional thought number 13 in our devotional series, “The Protest is Not Over: Transformation is Key to Reformation.”

“He sent redemption unto his people: He hath commanded his covenant for ever: Holy and reverend is his name. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: A good understanding have all they that do his commandments: His praise endureth for ever.” (Psalm 111:9–10).

God has promised good understanding to all, even the simple, who do His commandments by His grace. All who are empowered to follow His will give Him the honor and respect due His name. We should be hyper sensitive on this point lest we ascribe the holiness due His name, to others. This is why, even when we show deference and respect to those in authority, we must not even consider crossing the line in elevating them to the level of the incomparable God. For we all are enfeebled mortals who all await the gifts and power of God for our daily lives and guidance. Thus, all praise is due to the one true and living God, in the divine persons of the Father, Son, and blessed Holy Spirit.

Notice what the Bible says: “But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.” (Matthew 23:8–12). Where have religious people gotten the idea to ascribe God’s honor to faulty human beings by calling them reverend, father, master, my great one, pope, my lord, etc? How could we have fallen so short of God’s mark of righteousness that we elevate human beings to the esteem of which only He is worthy? God forbid that we should blaspheme His name and give a false view of His exalted character by allowing people to share His title. There is no god on earth. There is no exalted representative who holds the oracles of God and doles them out to those who follow his prescriptions. There is one God and Father of us all. He is above all sin, full of grace and truth, and abundant in power, mercy, and love. No person on earth has earned the right of our worship, considering we all await God for every breath.

Be thankful that God is the incomparable One, who is always holy, just, and true. He has sent redemption to His people and the forgiveness of sins to all who will submit to Him. Blessed be His name forever and ever. Amen.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
