This is devotional thought number 16 in our devotional series, “The Protest is Not Over: Transformation is Key to Reformation.”

“For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5–6).

One of the most unfortunate things with which we must contend, is death. A young woman told me one day that she missed her father. He died after a lengthy battle with cancer. I told her that we were not created to be separated. God intended from the beginning that we should live forever. But, of course, sin has entered into the world (I did not say this to her). And as a function of our sinful experience, death touches every one of us.

Another thing that is almost as unfortunate as death itself, is the false notion that our dead do not rest in their graves. What if your loving parent, who passed away 10 years ago, were in heaven watching you go through a difficult marriage? What if your deceased son were in heaven having to watch you go through a divorce because your spouse does not love you anymore and left you? Would heaven be a happy place for your loved ones? Conversely, what if your loved ones passed away and went to hell and you have to think about them burning forever and ever? What kind of life would you have? What if you both died; you went to heaven and your loved one went to hell, and you have to watch your loved one burn? Would that be a good thing? No!

Thankfully, God gives each of us an opportunity to be saved. Thankfully, while living on this earth, we do not have to worry about our loved ones who have died watching us suffer on earth, nor do we need to worry about our loved ones burning in hell forever while we are here distressed about it. The Bible is clear; when we die, we are resting in the grave. It does not get any simpler than that. We don't have to wonder if our houses are being haunted by dead folks. We do not have to be concerned that they may contact us from another world. Every person who has ever died awaits resurrection. Some await resurrection unto everlasting life, and some, unfortunately, are awaiting the final judgment. But for now, each of us have the privilege of resting in the fact that God has made provision for us all to be saved.

So, don't worry about your dead loved ones; they are resting. While you are alive, invest your time getting to know God and helping others do the same. One day soon, all those resting in their graves, who loved the Lord, will be raised and be given immortal bodies. There will be no more sickness, pain, crying, or death. Sin will be destroyed, and we will live with God. I’m looking forward to that day. I hope you are too.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
