This is devotional thought number 3 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Matthew.”

“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:16–17).

The Bible is clear! Baptism, true baptism is done by immersion, not sprinkling. The question is are we immersed in the Holy Spirit when we get baptized or do we just get a little wet and go about our business as usual? Inquiring minds want to know.

The story of Christ’s baptism is intriguing for a number of reasons; not the least of which is what happened as He came up out of the waters of the Jordan River. We know from Paul’s writings that baptism, for us, is a dying to our sinful lifestyles and a resurrection to righteousness. This blessing was afforded us by Jesus being baptized, fulfilling all righteousness in our stead. However, we must understand that there is no miracle power in the water, or in the practice of baptism. The miracle is in the work the Holy Spirit had done to get you to that point of decision, and His power to purify you until Jesus returns. Thus it is that when Jesus came up out of the water, the Holy Spirit was revealed in His life, in a special way, and the Father’s approval was trumpeted in distinct tones. “This is my Son who pleases me.”

Did you know that when we accept Jesus as our personal Savior, the same is said of us? Notice what the Scriptures say: “He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” (John 1:11–12). “For He foreordained us (destined us, planned in love for us) to be adopted (revealed) as His own children through Jesus Christ, in accordance with the purpose of His will [because it pleased Him and was His kind intent]— [So that we might be] to the praise and the commendation of His glorious grace (favor and mercy), which He so freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.” (Ephesians 1:5–6, AMP). The King James Version says that God accepted is in the beloved Jesus Christ. Therefore, the baptism of Jesus Christ, along with the rest of His ministry, positions those who have faith in Him, to be fully immersed in the Holy Spirit and to please God, our Father. Thank God for such a blessed gift!
