This is devotional thought number 5 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Matthew.”

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Matthew 5:9).

What a mighty God we serve! Have you ever been so blessed you just couldn’t stand it? I mean, have you been overwhelmed by the goodness of God, to the point of awe? When you really think about being a peacemaker, and thus being identified by God as His child, it is awe inspiring.

We were born with a huge problem. Actually, it was bigger than huge. It was an insurmountable mountain that would have destroyed all human life if God did not step in on time. That mountain, as you may have already guessed, was sin. Sin placed a wedge of hostility between us and God, but He was kind enough climb that mountain, through the Person and work of Jesus Christ, and die on it. Jesus gave His life on Mount Calvary as the Father was in Him, reconciling the world unto Himself. They did not have to do it; but for the sake of peace, they did. They reached across the proverbial aisle to make amends with us, even though God did nothing, absolutely nothing, wrong!

This is where today’s blessing comes in. You see, as if God making peace with us and empowering us to live above sin were not good enough, He also gave us a job to do, in His name. Those who are reunited with God through the forgiveness of sins due to His successful peace treaty, immediately become peacemakers just like Him. Earthly treaties between and among nations always breakdown because one of the parties does not keep up their end of the deal. However, Jesus, being the Representative of both the heavenly and earthly sides of the agreement to keep peace, affords us all the privilege and stewardship authority to facilitate peace on earth, good will among people. Are you in awe that God would choose you to help those who were once hostile toward God to become recipients of His grace?

Peacemaking is all about being transformed by the Prince of Peace and then becoming reflectors of His love. God’s will is that all be saved in His eternal kingdom, and anything you and I can do to help as many as possible experience that salvation is a privilege. Give thanks.

This has been the gospel according to Matthew. Be transformed by it.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
