This is devotional thought number 6 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Matthew.”

“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” (Matthew 6:14–15).

Silly Me! I thought I could get out of forgiving people who did me dirty, but what I discovered was if I ever hoped to be forgiven by God, I needed to allow Him the access to forgive others through me. I could not do it on my own.

Have you ever felt like you could not forgive someone? I mean, you figured you could forgive most things like somebody lying about you, stealing your favorite CD, or dinging the side of your vehicle, but not that - not the unmentionable thing that really ruined your life. Forgiving that, is out of the question. After all, God understands, right?

There’s a part of the Lord’s prayer directly preceding our theme text that says to God, “forgive us our sins, in the same manner we forgive others.” When I was a silly new believer, I thought I could cherish an unforgiving spirit toward those who did unmentionable things to me, and still receive the blessing of God’s forgiveness, just as long as I did not pray that part of the prayer. Who, in their right mind would pray judgment upon themselves? Not me! I am so much smarter than that. Here’s the thing, though: according to our theme text, that’s the way it is anyway. Whether we pray like that or not, God forgives us in the same manner we forgive others; which is why Paul said, “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32). Do you see how that works?

So, be certain that you are not as silly as I was by throwing away your forgiveness. When you really think about it, even those unmentionable infractions others may have perpetrated against us are not even close to as bad as how we have treated God. Our sins caused the death of our Creator, and yet God so loved us that He was willing to forgive us and provide hope in the following closing passage of Scripture: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9).

This has been the gospel according to Matthew. Be transformed by it.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
