This is devotional thought number 7 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Matthew.”
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” (Matthew 7:7–11).
“Daddy, daddy, daddy! Please give me this! Please give me that! Can we do this? Can we do that? I want this! I want that!” It seems the deluge of requests and borderline demands are endless when little children really want something. They will not be daunted. They will not be refused. Eventually, they will get something from their parents, from the endless scroll of requests. Truth is, parents, even parents who get weary from the constant asking, love to give good things to our children. Their persistence ultimately pays off, in one way or another. Is God less of a benefactor than faulty human beings?
God wants to hear your voice! We have talked about this during our devotional time a few times over the years. He never gets tired of hearing you ask for your heart’s desires. In fact, He loves it so much that if you delight yourself in Him, He will polish up your desires and align them with His will, so He can increase His affirmative answers to your prayers. Isn’t that wonderful? Isn’t it great that the Creator is so interested in you that He is waiting to open up the windows of heaven and pour you out an overwhelming flood of blessings?
Every good and perfect gift comes from God. True! He will not withhold any good thing from those who love Him. True. Now, let me add a layer to today’s theme passage by directing your attention to an alternate reading of verse 11: “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:13). Whoa! Details matter. Not only is God willing and ready to give you every good and perfect gift, generally, but He has promised sincere seekers, the Holy Spirit. He will give the Holy Spirit in more abundance to those who ask Him than the most compassionate earthly parent will give gifts to their darling little children. So, do yourself a favor: continue asking for God’s blessings, seeking His face, and knocking to receive all of God’s best in your life. He has promised to overwhelm you will answers to your prayers.
This has been the gospel according to Matthew. Be transformed by it.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
