This is devotional thought number 9 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Matthew.”

“And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house. But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.” (Matthew 9:1–8).

I think I mentioned this to you yesterday when we talked about Jesus’ power to command even evil spirits and they obey Him without a moment’s resistance. I underscored many times God’s words impacted persons, places, and things miraculously. The question I left for your consideration was, “Are you willing to accept God’s words?”

Today’s story is one of my all-time favorites in the Bible. I particularly appreciate the fulsome account in Mark 2:1-14. At any rate, we see the Master at work yet again. WIth the power resident in Him, He spoke healing and forgiveness into the life of a paralyzed man. I almost gave the false impression that he was both physically and spiritually paralyzed, which was not the case. I am sure he was sad and weary at times due to his condition. I am sure he experienced doubts at times about whether God would heal him, especially since he may have entertained a sin practice that caused this physical malady. Mark you, I am not saying that is the case with all who are suffering from sickness or disease. I am saying that was likely the case with this man in particular.

In Mark’s account, this man was full of faith; he had four good friends who had a ton of faith too, who also carried him into the presence of Jesus as He preached in a man’s home. The two gospel writers agree that Jesus gave the man a package deal in answer to their faith. He healed AND forgave the man. While he may have been satisfied to be made righteous in God’s sight and forgiven for all of his past sins, Jesus gave him a bonus miracle. WHere sin abounded in the man’s life, both physically and spiritually, God’s grace abounded all-the-more! Jesus spoke power, forgiveness, and healing into his life; and to the amazement of all, and chagrin of Jesus’ enemies, it all happened immediately. In a moment; in a twinkling of an eye, Jesus made this man whole.

Are you amazed? Are you hopeful? Is your faith now reaching out to Jesus for wholeness and holiness? I hope so. He has not changed. He is faithful to bring miraculous favor into our lives when it brings Him most honor and us most benefit. Trust Him.

This has been the gospel according to Matthew. Be transformed by it.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
