This is devotional thought number 11 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Matthew.”
Oftentimes I get weary. It is not for lack of sleep, however. I go to bed early enough that I get adequate rest. My weariness is tied to the burdens of this life. Like you, I have bills, trials, obligations, physical and emotional challenges, and disappointments. It seems that none of these choose convenient times to impact my life. I suppose if the burdens of life came at opportune times, they would not be burdens after all.
Some of us allow our burdens to block the rays of hope and light that the Most High sheds upon our pathways. But I find hope in this: “For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever” (2 Corinthians 4:17–18, NLT). If we keep a right perspective in this life, and invest our trust in God, we will never be completely overwhelmed.
Has God promised rest for the weary? Yes! He said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.] Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest (relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls. For My yoke is wholesome (useful, good—not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne” (Matthew 11:28–30, AMP). In exchange for our weariness, God offers us rest. But, the condition is that we surrender our burdens to Him and take upon us a life of cooperation with Him. Whatever work He would have us do, for the benefit of others would become our new perspective. The great thing about this exchange is that when we take up the work God outlines for us, we ever have Him with us. He never leaves us alone. This is reason to rejoice! He never leaves us alone.
If you ever get weary, like me, ask the Lord to refocus your attention to whatever His desire is for your life. Then trust that He will be with you. In this, you will find your burdens becoming light, and rest unto your soul.
This has been the gospel according to Matthew. Be transformed by it.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
