This is devotional thought number 10 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7).

Let me be frank with you. One of the reasons some of the most noble among us do not experience more victories over temptations to sin, is because we get the cart and horse priority/perspective backwards. There are so many other reasons, but I really want to focus on this one today.

Notice that the Bible says that we must resist the devil, and he will flee from us! Most of us burn a lot of energy in resisting, striving, trying, attempting, struggling, abstaining, etc., but are continuing to fail at receiving the victory we seek. So, what do we do? We get back on our spiritual horse and start resisting, striving, trying, attempting, struggling, abstaining, and crying, but are continuing to fail at receiving the victory we seek. Rinse and repeat. No sustained victory. Why not?

One of the reasons I don’t like some of the children’s Bible books and adult Bible study booklets is because many of the editors play God and eliminate valuable portions of texts they think are unecessary to convey their idea. Pardon me if you think I was harsh. That’s my little opinion for what it’s worth. In some cases, this method is OK, I guess, but in many more, it’s a spiritual trainwreck and the readers seldom survive the crash.

Did you notice that I left out the most vital element of today’s Scripture focus in the second paragraph? I highlighted the resistance portion and completely left out the submission part. Inspiration said that we must first submit ourselves to God, and then we will be able to resist the devil. The power is in submission to God and resistance is our cooperation with the power He provides to submitted people.

As I often say, do yourself a favor, will you? Invest the lionshare of your devotional time asking God how to surrender your will to Him. Ask Him to take over the wheel in your spiritual vehicle. That way, when you necessarily resist the devil, you will have staying power. You will no longer be focused on the devil or resistance. You will then be focused on God Himself. Then, you will have the cart and horse perspective right, to the glory of God. If you submit to God, first (the horse), then resist the devil in God’s strength (the cart), he will flee from you. This does not mean that he will not return for round two and three in his bout against your soul, but God does promise that, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: The righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” (Proverbs 18:10). “Cleave unto the Lord your God, as ye have done unto this day. For the Lord hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day. One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the Lord your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you. Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the Lord your God.” (Joshua 23:8–11). The same God who fought human enemies on behalf of His children in the Old Testament era, will fight principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places. God never loses a fight.

If you want to be safe from yielding to temptation, learn submission and your life will never be the same. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
