This is devotional thought number 11 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9).

In today’s Scripture focus we see one of the easiest of God’s promises from which to benefit. There are no secret doorways to pass through. There are no secret handshakes to memorize. You don’t need to have connections or namedrop. You simply need to follow His simple instruction with the strength He gives you, and the promise is yours. This promise brings with it, eternal life.

As they say, “Confession is good for the soul.” I totally agree. Unconfessed sin separates us from God. That separation is horrible for the soul. The Bible says, “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; Neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, And your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” (Isaiah 59:1–2). Then God gives the remedy, which is to confess and turn away from those sins. Why do we make it so difficult at times? Notice what else the Bible says on this subject: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14). Yes, as always, these verses have a specific context, but the principle can be broadly applied. Coming clean, and being honest in our agreement with God is key to forgiveness and cleansing. We cannot be cleansed from unrighteousness we continue to nurture and enjoy. God is holy. We are not. All that is not, is combustible, because God’s essence is a consuming fire. If we allow our sin to supercede our agreement with God, we cannot live in His presence. It is physically and spiritually impossible.

I have waxed eloquently with you on this subject many times over the years, but today I need to keep it as simple as possible. If you wish to live with God eternally, and enjoy all the blessings He has promised His people over the last several thousand years, please ask Him to give you an agreeable spirit and confess your sins to Him. If you have harmed anyone, ask Him for the grace to confess to them, what you have done. Be specific, and if there is a need for restitution, ask God to show you how to make it. Then, as the Holy Spirit continues to facilitate and activate this process in your life, ask Him for the faith to believe that you have received it, and it shall be done unto you. Do not put yourself on probation. Do not keep going over your past confessed/forsaken sins. Do cherish a forgiving attitude toward those who may have offended you. Give thanks. Move forward in faith, knowing that God promises to hear your prayers, renew a right spirit within you, forgive and cleanse you from all unrighteousness. He is faithful. He is just. His promises are assured. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
