This is devotional thought number 12 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).

Sometimes the simplest promises are the sweetest. Have you noticed that this series is heavy on simplicity? We have covered all sorts of very important, complex issues over the years (as well we should have), but sometimes we are so discouraged or buffeted by doubt that we need a simple word. Try this one on for size: God loves you so much that He gave all to save you.

Seldom do Bible students and expositors such as myself note the promise of John 3:16. We underscore the mysterious love of the Father. Good. We highlight the principle of free gift giving. Wonderful. We break down the complexities of the word from which “begotten” was translated. Splendid! We laud the blessing of saving faith versus a mere assent to what is obviously true. Perfect. And we sometimes focus on the contrast between everlasting life with and through Christ, and the effects of eternal perishing to those who hate love and refuse to be wooed by the Holy Spirit. Necessary. How do some of us miss the promise part?

God said that He loves us so much that He gave all to save us, and promised that anyone, from anywhere in the world who is courageous enough to put all of their belief eggs into God’s one omnipotence basket would possess eternal life forever (redundancy alert!). God promises that we can overcome our mortal essence if we simply trust Him in everything. So trust Him and look forward to receiving immortality when Jesus returns so you can fulfill God’s plan for you. “May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word.” (2 Thessalonians 2:16–17, HCSB).
