This is devotional thought number 13 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!

“Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you really are My disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”” (John 8:31–32, HCSB).

Part of the reason so many people suffer from certain mental health challenges, and by extension, spiritual health challenges is because they do not feel like they belong anywhere. They have been rejected by those who should have loved them. They have been marginalized in the workplace. They have been sexually harassed or abused in one of many ways. They have no sense of belonging. The outcome is low perception of value, limited ability to carry on healthy relationships, misapprehension of God’s love and righteous requirements, etc. Frankly, these are the tip of the iceberg.

In John 8, Jesus has an encounter with the height of misogynistic society when a woman’s abusers dragged her before Jesus after (as some commentators say) they all committed adultery with her. They had no problem shaming her with the intent of destroying her and Jesus in one dastardly plot. To make a long story short, they failed, Jesus blew their silly little plot out the frame, and elevated the precious woman to walk away from the whole ordeal with her head held high. Jesus showed her value in how He treated her at her lowest emotional and spiritual state. She was guilty, but redeemable; and redeemed she was.

The story continues with proud religious leaders (so-called) inciting a fifth grader-ish duel over pedigree and who had the right to call Abraham and God their fathers. It’s sickening and silly when you really think about it. They were speaking to the One who inhabits eternity with God; who came before Abraham was, about genealogies. Really? Again, their proud plot was spoiled by the One who is Truth in the flesh.

Being the wonderful Saviour He was, Jesus made time amid the ridiculous happenings of the day to make a startling promise. There were present some who loved and believed in Him. To those folks, who along with the woman “caught” in the act of adultery, did not have a sense of belonging to the established religious order, He said, “If you continue to abide in the principles of my Word, you are my real disciples.” And He did not stop there. He continued, “You will know the truth and be eternally liberated by Him.” Did you get the subtlety? Those who keep the faith in Christ will know Him intimately, to the point of transforming their lives, and that intimate experience in relationship with Him, will be powerful enough to free their minds, spiritual lives, and emotional wellbeing. Talk about a package deal!

If you wish to belong; if you wish to be free indeed, simply continue to embrace God’s every word. When you do that, you will show that you are true disciples of the King of Kings. True disciples of the King cannot be bound by trials, temptations, tribulations, addictions to sin, or any other mutation of unholiness. Those who believe in Jesus belong to the family of God. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
