This is devotional thought number 15 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your graciousness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:4–7, HCSB).
I have said this so many times to you over the years, but it bears repeating. God is good! As such, the apostle Paul encourages us to rejoice in the Lord at all times. The psalmist said it this way: “I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: The humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, And let us exalt his name together.” (Psalm 34:1–3). In another place Paul said in very few words: “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Quench not the Spirit.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16–19).
Notice the relationship between prayers, thanksgiving, and rejoicing. If you are not full of praise at all times, it might be because you don’t prove God enough. It might be because you do not ask, seek, and knock with a heart of submission enough. What happens is that when people make a habit of praying without ceasing, we seek God’s providence in our lives. We see where God answered our prayers according to our desires; and at other times answered according to our needs. When we can see His handiwork in our everyday lives, even when we are in the midst of our greatest trials, we cannot help but to rejoice, boast about God, magnify Him, and be kind to others.
Among the many outcomes of dedicated prayer is the tendency away from worry. Worry is a blind leader of the blind. Worry cannot see into the future. God has a way prepared to bring much needed reprieve to all who continue to seek His face. His ways and thoughts are so far above our ways and thoughts. He has so many ways to handle our difficulties if we will just place them into His care, relinquishing worry and doubt.
Are you ready for God’s promise? He said if we will entrust our prayers, praise, and life of gratitude to Him, He will give us miraculous peace in the midst of our life storms, and make our minds a fortress against evil. Here’s one more very encouraging passage to help you get through the day: “Great peace is for those who love your law, and they do not have a cause for stumbling. I hope for your salvation, O Yahweh, and do your commands. My soul heeds your testimonies, and I love them exceedingly. I heed your precepts and testimonies, because all my ways are before you. Let my cry come before you, O Yahweh; give me understanding according to your word. Let my plea come before you; Deliver me according to your word. Let my lips pour out praise, because you teach me your statutes. Let my tongue sing of your word, because all your commands are right. Let your hand be my help, because I have chosen your precepts. I long for your salvation, O Yahweh, and your law is my delight. Let my soul live that it may praise you, and let your ordinances help me.” (Psalm 119:165–175, LEB).
