This is devotional thought number 16 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Matthew.”
“And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” (Matthew 19:5-6)
One of two institutions established in the Garden of Eden during creation week was that of marriage. God created male and female, Adam and Eve, and commanded that they be fruitful to replenish the earth. God chose to extend a part of His creative prerogatives into humankind by allowing them to share in the process of creation. While we are not able, of ourselves, to create from nothingness, He has built into us a mechanism to procreate. This is an incredible honor and responsibility.
When God created marriage, He did not intend for it to be taken lightly. The married couple was to stay together eternally. Once sin entered into the equation and eternity was temporarily replaced by time, at least on this side of heaven, man and wife were intended to stay together until death.
I often wonder what God’s ultimate purpose for marriage is. Is it to populate the earth? Is it so we can have a permanent companion to ward off loneliness? I am not certain. One thing I do know is that, perhaps, the most important purpose for marriage, since sin entered into the world, is salvation. The Bible says that when we get to heaven, we will no longer marry, or be given in marriage (Matthew 22:30). Does this mean that we will all get a divorce at the second coming of Christ? No. If something good ceases to exist at the second coming, it must have something to do with preparing us for that event. This is why God is so adamant about people choosing godly spouses. If a person is married, who has more influence over them than their spouse? We are to help one another stay focused on our goal which is spending eternity with God. When people have children, it is of the utmost importance to teach them in the things of God, which includes preparing others to go to heaven. Marriage is intended to be an evangelistic union between man and woman. If at some point our marriages become threatened, we should take our cases before God. He is certainly rooting for our success. He has a great work for us to do as a result of our successful relationships.
As you ponder these thoughts, remember that the ultimate union in the universe is between God and us. He wants nothing more than to be together with us forever. Are you remaining faithful to Him? He has been faithful to you.
This has been the gospel according to Matthew. Be transformed by it.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
