This is devotional thought number 16 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!
“As you know, you Philippians were the only ones who gave me financial help when I first brought you the Good News and then traveled on from Macedonia. No other church did this. Even when I was in Thessalonica you sent help more than once. I don’t say this because I want a gift from you. Rather, I want you to receive a reward for your kindness. At the moment I have all I need—and more! I am generously supplied with the gifts you sent me with Epaphroditus. They are a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to God. And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:15–19, NLT).
The story in our theme text today is self explanatory. You don’t need me to editorialize it. Let me just say one thing, however, God has a way of repaying evil for evil, and good for good. Let’s talk about the latter today.
The Philippians showed exceptional care for Paul when he needed financial help. The Bible says that God’s messengers need not make provisions for themselves when they are on God’s mission. He said that they should enter the homes of all who extend hospitality and leave a blessing behind if they receive the message of peace from God. He said that those who give His servants a drink of cool water are blessed when they do so. Paul said that this kind of selfless behaviour is rewardable in the eyes of God.
For the first time ever, though I have read this passage more times than I can remember, I am seeing the relationship of God’s promise through the mouth of Paul, to supply all we need according to God’s eternal riches in Christ, with us being selfless givers to others. Yes, God will supply all we need. But the context of the blessing Paul is pronouncing is after these wonderful people bent over backwards to be of service to Him. God has a way of rewarding good for good; not because we are good, but because we surrender all to Him, which He works out for the good. Say that sentence three times. The wise man said it this way: “The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” (Proverbs 11:25, NLT). One last passage: “Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.” (2 Corinthians 9:6–8, NLT). The mouth of the Lord has spoken! Give heed to His precious promises.—L.
