This is devotional thought number 17 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Matthew.”

“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26).

When stores have great return policies on merchandise, it encourages more consumers who would otherwise be timid about buying a product, to take a chance. They know that if it is not suitable, they can either return it for a full refund or make an even exchange. What if after you purchased a product the return policy changed, and you wanted to do an even exchange? What if you spent ten dollars on something, and when you tried to exchange it for something comparable, the merchant told you that you needed to pay an additional ninety dollars? Would you consider that fair?

This life is full of decisions. Everyday, in terms of priority, we have to decide what is important. Oftentimes people are tempted to sacrifice family, work, and salvation on the altar of illegal business dealings. Whether it is insider trading on the stock market, dealing illegal drugs, or stealing merchandise for personal gain, some are willing to trade a vibrant relationship with God for temporary gratification. This is an uneven exchange. What the Lord has to offer is by far more meaningful and enjoyable than anything that this world has to offer. “He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.” (Ecclesiastes 5:10).

What do you sometimes put in the place of God? Is there anything that takes your attention away from aspiring to holiness? What habit has become more important than eternal life? The Lord is consistently knocking at the door of our hearts to show us how wonderful He is. Do not settle for the things of this world that will pass away in a moment. “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9).

This has been the gospel according to Matthew. Be transformed by it.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
