This is devotional thought number 24 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Matthew.”
“He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.” (Matthew 27:42).
I used to work in a university setting. Often there was discussion about prerequisites. There was discussion about which preparatory courses are required before a student was allowed to register for certain other courses. It is important for students to successfully complete their prerequisites so that they will be successful in the next level of classes. These requirements are usually beneficial to the students involved.
When Jesus lived on earth, His ministry was constantly assailed by the devil and unbelievers. Among the unbelievers were those who claimed that they would believe if He would simply demonstrate, according to their own set of rules, that He was who He claimed to be. They set ungodly prerequisites, in their own minds, for believing in Christ.
After living a life of absolute faith, Jesus walked the last few miles of His earthly ministry to the cross at Calvary. He healed, resurrected, and restored many people in His years of ministry and now He must die in the place of sinners. The cup of the wrath of God against sin was about full and soon to be unfurled on His only begotten Son who had become sin for us.
As Jesus became weaker, approaching death, the devil attempted one last time, to cause Him to lose control. He tried to get Him to exert His godly prerogative to save Himself from suffering and death. He sent many to insult the Lord and tempt Him to come down from the cross. He knew that if he could succeed, the condemnation of all humankind was certain, and we would be lost forever. During the process, some said that if Jesus would simply come down from the cross, they would believe. They set up the prerequisite that He must fulfill in order for them to believe.
Do you set ungodly prerequisites for God to meet before you will trust Him fully? Does He need to send you a spouse, great new job, or new home, in order for you to begin trusting Him? Does He need to answer your prayers in the manner in which you prayed them, for you to have faith in Him? Must He heal your disease on your schedule in order to be worthy of worship? Pray that the Lord will teach us to love and worship Him, regardless of how we feel that He should perform. If God never does another thing according to our notions, He is still God, and we do not have the right to set prerequisites for Him.
This has been the gospel according to Matthew. Be transformed by it.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
