This is devotional thought number 1 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Psalms.”

“Blessed is the man That walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor standeth in the way of sinners, Nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; And in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, That bringeth forth his fruit in his season; His leaf also shall not wither; And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” (Psalm 1:1–3).

Are you blessed? If you believe you are, how do you know?

Oftentimes people greet one another and ask how the other is doing. If one of those being greeted is a believer, it is not unusual to hear, “I’m blessed.” Living in a blessed state is wonderful, especially considering the trials and turmoil our world faces today. How can we be assured of a blessing when life seems to be full of cursing? With floods, wildfires, tornadoes, and earthquakes all taking turns to devastate thousands at a time. WIth crimes against humanity being perpetrated by common criminals and powerful persons that should have the public’s trust, but do not increasing with time, it is becoming more difficult to feel blessed. Thank God, however, that God’s blessings are not bound to feelings. Most times we have to extend our faith to God and know we are blessed simply because He said so.

The Psalmist underscored the fact that those who choose to swim upstream and push against the spiritual status quo are blessed when they find God’s path of righteousness and remain on it. They are like trees planted by the rivers of water. They drink deeply of the Water of Life, Jesus Christ, and never hunger or thirst because He fills them to overflowing. Any scientist will tell you that a well watered tree cannot be dried up and burn as long as it is continually connected to its water source. So it is with those who have Jesus’ well of water flowing into us unto everlasting life. We will not dry up like the chaff. We will not be blown in the wind. We will not be gathered into bundles to be burned. Why not? Those who remain connected to the Water of Life will remain rooted and grounded in Him, and everything we do will; not might, but will, prosper. How do we know? We know this because the Lord, our God, has promised. More than this, He has also promised that those who are prospering in connection to Him, will also bear much fruit.

So, if you wish to prosper, bear much fruit, be well satisfied and blessed to overflowing, delight yourself in the law of God and make Him your meditation every day and night. If you do this you will be blessed.

This has been the gospel according to Psalms. Live by it!—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
