This is devotional thought number 4 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Psalms.”

“Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?” (Psalms 77:13).

The Old Testament sanctuary was God’s way of teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to the children of Israel. Through this means, they were to understand the eternal weight of sin, the blessing of salvation, and the love of God. All of this would be taught by pointing forward to Jesus Christ.

The weight of sin was revealed, in that Jesus was not spared the punishment intended for sinners because He became sin for us (Romans 8:32). He carried our sins to the grave and died the second death on our behalf.

The blessing of salvation is revealed, in that Christ alone could become the propitiation for our sins. He became our substitute, because the Father wanted to save us. The only way we could be saved was if someone greater than or equal to the law that was transgressed by humankind, took on the eternal penalty for our sin. Jesus fit the requirements and He decided to take our sins all the way to Calvary.

The love of God was revealed in the details of the sanctuary. God specified the exact path one must travel to be forgiven of sin and cleansed from all unrighteousness. If anyone faithfully followed His command, they were certain to be restored into right relationship with Him.

As you can see, the sanctuary message is important. Every sacrifice, material, and piece of furniture pointed forward to Jesus. The very sanctuary itself represented Him. He was the dwelling place of the Father; therefore, He too was the temple of God (John 2:19-21).

For anyone to approach the presence of God in the sanctuary, they must pass through the veil into the holy of holies. The only way for that to happen was for someone to go in for us, or someone to come out to us. Jesus met the requirement perfectly. “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)” (Hebrews 10:19-23).

Even in the Old Testament, the way of salvation was through Christ. Today, let us hold fast to Jesus Christ. When we do so, we will know the way. “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6).

This has been the gospel according to Psalms. Live by it!—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
