This is devotional thought number 32 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!

“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” (Matthew 6:12).

I am willing to bet you've never seen our theme text in any personal promise books. There is so much love and truth in this passage. Let’s get it.

Jesus gave a wonderful model of prayer in what many of us now call the The Lord’s Prayer. I’m sure He did not intend that His instruction be reduced to a mere copycat recitation, although the words are inspiring. He wanted us to fully embrace the principles and be transformed by them while we pray. One vital element upon which we will focus today is the promise of forgiveness.

A promise of reciprocal forgiveness is implied in Jesus’ words on forgiveness. God will 100% answer this prayer, whether we actually pray it or not, in the way it is in the text. He will forgive us in the same manner we forgive others. This is either encouraging or discouraging, depending on how you see forgiveness. It is encouraging if you recognize you are a sinner like everyone else, and that it is foolhardy to hold malice against those who’ve offended you, considering God is willing to let bygones be bygones for your offences, which actually required the death of His Son. Do you see how the scene turned up on us? If we accept the forgiveness that comes through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we are blessed and highly favored. It was His pleasure to drink the cup of wrath against sin, to the bitter dregs for you! However, if you are proud enough to hold another sinner’s sin against him/her, despite the fact Jesus gave His all for you to be saved, you become guilty of the body and blood of Jesus Christ. I wish I could say it another way, but the Scriptures cannot be broken.

So, here’s an opportunity for all of us to benefit from the upside of today’s promise. We can ask God to take over the reigns of our lives, surrender all rights to be angry and resentful towards those who have harmed us, and allow Him to bountifully lavish His brand of forgiveness on all who, like us, do not deserve it. The outcome of this will be that we will assume our roles as true children of God (according to Matthew 5:9), and we will release ourselves and the offender(s) from prison to unforgiveness.

God will keep His promise 100% of the time, to forgive us as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. Why not accept the upside of the promise? It’s so much sweeter than the alternative. Here’s a verse to encourage you on the difficult journey of forgiveness: “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:30–32).
